Week in Review 46/2014

What did I see?
Nothing special, just a bunch of old Bones episodes which we are currently re-watching!

What did I listen to?
HIM - Right here in my arms

What did I ask myself?
How can she expect us to do everything with less people?

What did I read?
I'm reading "Geek Love" by Katherine Dunn at the moment. It is about a freakshow couple and their offspring which are a bit different than the norms. Mommy and Daddy both decided to give their children an opportunity to get big in the business by taking drugs, radioactive materials and pharmaceuticals during sex and pregnancy. Their lovely family contains an albino dwarf girl Oly (who is the main story teller), Arty the fishboy and the siamese twins Iphy and Elly.  Lateron "Chick" is born who is a powerful telekine. The book offers a strangely outside look on us norms and shows the good and bad sides of being born to the traveling folk. I'm not half done but very captured!

What did I work on?
A backdrop for photos. But not for me!

I was happy about...
Doing sports again and yummi cooking

I was annoyed about...
Hectic times at work

I bought...
Only food and tickets for "Der Ring" 2015, where I will see Metallica *yay*

Sunday Sweet - Rainbow cake!

This weekend I'm at my mum's 60 Birthday Party! Her Birthday was actually some days ago (while in South Africa), but she celebrated just now. And I made rainbow cake!

The food colours I used are imported from the US as all German food colours I ever tried just gave bleak and light colours. These colours bang! I also used the raspberry cream from the last cakes again. The cake all in all reminds me of "Pink fluffy unicorns danicng on rainbows"...

Week in Review 45/2014

What did I see?
When I was in Rome (quite some time ago), I saw many beautiful marble statues. I loved the way the old artists were able to make the marble look soft and touchable like skin or soft fabrics! And now I find on the internet that the current artist Livio Scarpella made more such statues and even added precious stones to the:

What did I listen to?
John Sinclair audiobooks!

What did I ask myself?
What country is next? ;)

What did I read?
This week I read the Maze Runner books by James Dashner. I was again surprised by the closeness of book and movie although the book handled some parts better in my eyes. For example the boys in the book use swearwords and try to flirt with the only girl. But I'm not quite sure wether I can recommend the books. The story is rather simple about a messias figure who accepts a lot of things (and pains and horrible happenings) without much question. And the scientific background was not very satisfying for me as a scientist. But the storyline is interesting nevertheless!

What did I work on?
A dress and two shirts...

I was happy about...
Being back with my better (or worse?) half!

I was annoyed about...
Not being traveling any more

I bought...
Jewelry and some fabric and Biltong and gifts

Restyle jewelry toxic?

You might have noticed that I own some peices of Restyle jewelry (bought from Restyle.pl). I liked the designs and found the jewelry particularly well priced. The style reminds me of Alchemy gothic, suffering the same problems (soft metal, sometimes grates or lose stones) but also the same benefits (retty gothic styles, sparkly stones and bats+skulls).

But once I came back from South Africa, I read an article in the Leicestermercury journal about tests revealing very high levels of Cadmium in the necklace's alloy.  In the three tested pieces (one of which I own), the Cadmium levels were more than 8000 times as high as allowed by law!

Cadmium is a heavy metal and can cause poisoning and death when inhalated and ingested. Even worse, it can accumulate in the body. If and in what amounts Cadmium can be taken up by the skin is still under debate, although it is known that sweat can solve Cadmium from the alloy. Restyle's facebook page also answered that:

" "Having skin contact with cadmium is not known to cause health problems"or " virtually no cadmium can enter the body through the skin under normal circumstances"
So if you won`t lick, eat or breath older jewellery - you are going to be OK.
and that
"First of all - the cadmium jewellery law is only EU law - we have checked and there is no law in Australia forbidding cadmium in jewellery. The new European cadmium law came to life in december 2011.
So it means that due to regulations the cadmium jewellery before that date were perfectly fine and safe.
Which makes me even more nervous. I don't remember exactly when I bought my jewelry but I guess it was before 2011. So my jewelry was then regarded as safe but is not any longer? How can the recommended Cadmium levels change by 8000 times? Was the jewelry composition changed later? But why then did Restyle remove all metal jewelry from their website?

My friend recommended to gle some felt to the back to avoid skin contact. I started to paint the pieces with clear spray paint and exchange the necklaces. But still, the bad feeling stays and I regret that I ordered another necklace right before my trip to South Africa...

Do you have any Restyle jewelry? Will you continue to wear it or will you try to get your money back?
